SOMATIC EXPERIENCING® (SE)

SOMATIC EXPERIENCING® (SE)

Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a body-oriented therapeutic model developed by Dr. Peter Levine that helps heal trauma and other stress disorders. SE incorporates a trauma-informed therapeutic approach with techniques of body awareness and neuroscience. After experiencing a traumatic event, some people may become “stuck” in a trauma response of “fight, flight or freeze”. For example, a person “stuck” in a flight response may be experiencing severe anxiety, panic, hypervigilance, restlessness, and many other symptoms. The goal of somatic experiencing is to assist the client in processing a traumatic event in a safe and supportive space, so that they can move toward becoming “unstuck” from these responses. In a session, the therapist will help the client to work on small pieces of the trauma, slowly and one at a time, while closely tracking the client’s physical responses and bodily sensations. The therapist will help the client to connect with their body and to find places of safety and to identify supportive resources. Through experiencing the trauma in this safe and supportive manner, the client is often able to “complete” the trauma response and become “unstuck”.
